The overseas venue is yet to be decided but the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Sri Lanka, and England are likely contenders to host the five matches. Two of those fits are Pakistan and India.
India and Pakistan are in the same group with qualifiers in the six-nation Asia Cup.
This 50-over format tournament will start in September this year. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are inside the 2nd group.
13 matches including the final will be played in more than 13 days. According to the format of Asia Cup 2022, two teams from each group will go to the Super Four and two of them will play the final. Pakistan and India are likely to play three matches. Last year, Sri Lanka won the final of the Asia Cup by defeating Pakistan by 23 runs. Teams played the Asia Cup under the T20 format. The controversy over the hosting of the Asia Cup arose when BCCI Secretary Jay Shah told the media in October last year that his team would not go to Pakistan to play the event and that the tournament should be hosted by another country.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reacted strongly to this statement.
PCB had said that ‘if the Indian team does not come to Pakistan and attempts are made to deprive the country of hosting the Asia Cup, then the Pakistani team can also boycott the one-day World Cup in India this year. ‘ Harbhajan Singh, the former spinner of the Indian cricket team, also said that the team led by Rohit Sharma should not take the risk of going to Pakistan.
Harbhajan Singh said that the Indian team should not go to Pakistan because there is danger there. And why should we risk going there when their citizens do not feel safe in their own country?
