Motherboards are at the heart of every PC build. Although they are often overlooked because they don’t provide high-performance standards, they are still vital in many other ways. They determine what kind of connections your computer can make now and in the future. They also help to determine what to do if an electrical accident occurs.
What happens if a bad GPU is ordered and the GPU ends up frying? It will knock out your motherboard. It could fry your RAM. These are the stakes you should be using when choosing a board.
Selecting an X570 Motherboard
Although picking the right X570 motherboard is not an easy task, it can be done. There are certain things that you don’t need to worry about. Any X570 board will come with an AM4 socket. You don’t need to worry about processor support. Instead, focus on three main categories: build quality and port options.
This is largely self-explanatory. A cheap board that bends in your hand won’t hold up under stress isn’t going to last. A PCIe port that isn’t reinforced could sag under the heavy GPU. This could pose a risk to both components. If you are buying a motherboard for over $200, the quality of the build is not going to be a major factor in your decision. Motherboards used for gaming and other heavy-duty applications are more susceptible to heat stress than other electronics, especially when exposed to high temperatures. Although large heatsinks are useful, they are not necessary for heavy-duty applications.
How many USB ports do you require? How fast should those connections be? What about Type-C connections vs Type-A? Are you planning to run two GPUs? Are you planning to connect six hard drives? Six SATA connections will be required. Unless you need some drives to be M.2 SATA SSDs you will need another port.
It may be helpful to focus on the video ports depending on your reason for building a computer. Do they have only one HDMI slot or multiple HDMI slots? DisplayPort is there? What about legacy formats that work with older monitors? This can depend on how many monitors you wish to connect. It’s worth looking into if you intend to use a graphics card in your system. This card will offer new video port options.
These days sound cards are almost non-existent. Almost every motherboard will include an audio chipset. There is still a lot to choose from, especially if your audio equipment is of high quality or you work in audio.
Video chipsets can be ignored or forgotten if you don’t plan to use a video card with your system. What about wireless connections? Are you looking for a wireless card that can be integrated into your computer? What about Bluetooth support? Each additional chipset you add to a board will increase the price. It also means that you don’t have to purchase a PCI card in order to access the required features.
GIGABYTE AORUS Ultra X570
As a brand, GIGABYTE needs no introduction. GIGABYTE’s AORUS Ultra motherboard is gamer-oriented and has many extra features. Although this board may not be top-shelf quality, it is very close. This motherboard is as good as you can get for a mid-shelf one without it tumbling into the top tier. This makes it a great entry-level option for anyone looking to combine quality and value.
Layout & Chipset
You’ll see that the board uses an ATX standard layout. This layout has RAM in the upper left corner and PCI ports in the lower-left corner. This board is ideal for those who want to run two larger GPUs. There’s plenty of room between the PCI ports. Due to the heat shielding that they have added, you’ll notice that the board is a bit bulky.
The X570 Ultra AORUS Ultra supports third-generation Ryzen. It is also compatible with the second-generation Ryzen. You have four DIMMs in a standard array for memory. This allows you to have both a dual-channel and non-ECC configuration. The I/O shield has been integrated into the board so that you don’t have to worry about losing it or forgetting how to install it. This is a nice touch but you won’t see it very often unless the shield has integrated LEDs.
You can use wireless with an Intel WIFI 6 chipset that runs the most recent version of wireless technology. Bluetooth 5 is also supported. Both cases are very cutting-edge. This board can run Wi-Fi 6, which means it is capable of Gigabit bandwidth speeds. The audio chipset is equally impressive. The ACL1220-VB chipset supports the 125dB SNR amp-up chip. You won’t even need to add a sound card.
The I/O is very well organized. The I/O has a lot of space that isn’t used, making it look even neater. They’ve pushed the audio ports to the bottom of I/O, as is common. You’ll find an Ethernet port, a USB-C, and nine USB ports just above it. Due to bandwidth limitations, only two of the connections are USB 3.1 and three are USB 3.0. The rest are standard 2.0 ports that can be used for keyboards and mice.
